Lowestoft Fish Docks, or what is left of it is situated just south of Ness Point.
Once a thriving part of Lowestofts local ecomomy, now only a handful of local boats remain. Lowestoft, like most other fishing ports around the U.K has slowly lost its fleet to corruption and quotas.
Luckily for myself I work on the Fish Docks, with one of the few remaining fish merchants (see the Links page) and therefore get to watch birds in an area where most others don't get to see.
There are plenty of dry, industrial areas for the birds to forrage, or for diving birds there is the Trawl Dock, Waveney Dock and Hamilton Dock.
Autumn and winter are definately the best times for birds, with returning Turnstones and Rock Pipits seen daily and at close quarters. The odd Redshank or Sanderling will sometimes make an appearance.
Most recent highlight was a Slavonian Grebe diving on the Hamilton Dock in early 2009.
